The clinician-researchers of West End Medical Associates
We are dedicated to providing the best psychiatric care available anywhere, with a focus on professionalism, compassion, discretion, and optimal outcome. West End Medical Associates (WEMA) was founded in 1999 by Dr. Seidman as an Upper West Side private practice setting for research physicians from the Department of Psychiatry at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. We provide comprehensive assessment and treatment of all psychiatric conditions, and have particular expertise in psychopharmacology, treatment-resistant conditions, and clinical research. As academic psychiatrists, we keep current with the latest innovations in the field, and use the best available medical evidence to guide our clinical practice. We take the time to properly evaluate all new patients, and develop a comprehensive treatment plan that combines precision pharmacotherapy with creative problem-solving. We frequently work with psychotherapists, internists, and other clinicians to provide comprehensive psychiatric care.
What to expect...
To develop the most effective and appropriate treatment plan, a thorough and comprehensive psychiatric evaluation is completed. This is followed by a detailed discussion of treatment options. To determine whether or not medication treatment is indicated, we consider specific target symptoms and engage the patient and involved family in detailed discussion of the benefits, risks, and alternatives to medication so that an individual can determine whether or not that is an option they wish to pursue. The treatment will generally involve the following components:
Education regarding the problem or problems being treated, including non-medication supports or treatments and a thorough review of all treatment options;
Support that includes telephone availability for crises and routine questions;
Lab work and any other medical follow up as indicated; Contact with the individual’s primary care physician, therapist, or other pertinent providers;
Regular follow up, generally every 4 to 12 weeks.
